How to use this
  1. Aircraft — pick your airplane's profile (or add your tail number) and say the V-speeds out loud.

What the examiner really wants The big picture

Whether it's a stage check, a rental checkout, or the checkride itself, the person in the right seat wants to see you operate the airplane safely and make sound decisions — not perfection. Fly the airplane first, talk second. A good decision announced out loud beats a silent perfect maneuver.

The five tells of a sharp pilot

  • Flow, then checklist — do it from memory, then confirm with the printed list.
  • Callouts — "airspeed alive," "rotate," "positive rate," "runway made."
  • Clearing turns before every airwork maneuver, every time.
  • Eyes outside — especially at non-towered fields with mixed traffic.
  • Stabilized approach — not stable, go around. Calling it yourself is a plus, never a fault.
Study aid, not the POH. Numbers vary by model, year, and modifications — the POH for your specific airplane, your instructor, and the current FAR/AIM are always the final authority. Verify everything in the cockpit.

Callouts

"Full power, gauges green" → "airspeed alive" → "rotate" → "positive rate" → "flaps up."

Watch

Hot day or high field elevation = long roll, lazy climb. Rotate at the number and let it accelerate in ground effect before pitching for the climb.

  • Level off, let it accelerate, set cruise power (~2300–2500 RPM)
  • Lean the mixture per POH — EGT or fuel flow if equipped

Maneuvers
Airwork

Clearing turns before every one. Tolerances shown are Private ACS targets.

Setup / entry
  1. Clearing turns. Pick an altitude with room below (recover ≥1,500 AGL).
  2. Carb heat ON, reduce power, hold altitude as it slows.
  3. Add flaps on schedule if configured; trim.
  4. Settle just above the stall — no stall horn. Power to hold altitude.
Fly it

Pitch = airspeed, power = altitude. Lots of right rudder. Small, smooth inputs — you're behind the power curve.

Tolerances / misses

Alt ±100′, hdg ±10°, bank ±10°, speed +10/−0. Watch: horn blaring, under-ruddering, chasing altitude with pitch.

Entry — approach/landing config
  1. Clearing turns. Carb heat ON, throttle to idle/approach power.
  2. Landing flaps, establish a stabilized approach descent.
  3. Smoothly raise the nose to the stall; stay coordinated.
Recovery
  1. Pitch down — reduce AOA, break the stall.
  2. Full power, carb heat cold.
  3. Flaps to 20°, arrest the descent.
  4. Positive rate → flaps up → Vy, minimum altitude loss.
Errors

Uncoordinated at the break (wing drop), dumping all flaps at once, secondary stall from over-pitching.

Entry — takeoff/departure config
  1. Clearing turns. Slow to ~rotation speed, flaps 0–10°.
  2. Apply takeoff power and pitch up to induce the stall.
  3. Right rudder — the ball wants to swing.
Recovery
  1. Pitch down to reduce AOA (power's already up).
  2. Level the wings, coordinated.
  3. Return to climb attitude, Vy, minimum loss.
Errors

Not enough right rudder → wing drop / incipient spin. Fix AOA before rolling.

  1. Clearing turns; pick a reference heading + landmark.
  2. Roll to 45°; passing ~30°, add back-pressure and a touch of power.
  3. Hold altitude with pitch/trim, ball centered, eyes outside.
  4. Lead the rollout ~20°; release back-pressure & power as you level.
  5. Optional immediate reversal into the opposite 360°.
Tolerances / misses

Alt ±100′, bank ±5°, rollout ±10°. Losing altitude = not enough back-pressure; over-banking; staring at the panel.

The common thread

All three are about wind correction while dividing attention: steepest bank when groundspeed is highest (downwind), shallowest when lowest (upwind). Enter downwind, 600–1,000 AGL, pick emergency-landing options first.

Rectangular course

Fly a consistent distance from the field boundary; crab on the crosswind legs; anticipate turns based on groundspeed.

S-turns

Equal half-circles across a road; wings level crossing the road; steepest bank just after turning downwind.

Turns around a point

Constant radius around a landmark; bank varies continuously — steepest at the downwind-most point.

  • Throttle idle, carb heat as required
  • Bank ~30–45° to keep the nose down and clear the path below
  • Airspeed per POH — below Vno, well under Vne
  • Level off, restore power smoothly

    Pattern & Landings

    The frame that works at any field. Fill in your home field's specifics and brief them before every flight.

    • CTAF / tower frequency — and who else shares it
    • Field elevation & pattern altitude — TPA is usually 1,000′ AGL; verify in the Chart Supplement
    • Runways — lengths, calm-wind preference, right-traffic runways
    • Terrain, obstacles & noise abatement
    • Local traffic — flight schools, tour operators, helicopters, gliders

    Non-towered radio flow

    • ~10 mi out — position, altitude, intentions
    • Entering downwind (midfield 45° preferred)
    • Downwind → base → final, each: "[Field] traffic, [callsign], [position], [Field]"
    • Clear-of-runway call after landing

    Position reports are for other pilots, not ATC — say where you are, what you are, what you're doing.

    Landing types — quick cues

    Normal

    Stabilized, on speed, small corrections. Round out, hold it off, settle on the mains.

    Short-field

    POH approach speed (lower than normal), full flaps, precise aim point, minimum float; brakes after the mains.

    Soft-field

    Carry a little power, weight off the nosewheel, hold the nose up on rollout. Takeoff: lift off early in ground effect, accelerate, then climb.

    Crosswind

    Crab on final → wing-low sideslip through the flare; touch down upwind main first, aileron into the wind on rollout.

    Stabilized approach — go / no-go

    On speed (+10/−0), on glidepath, configured, aligned, steady sink by short final. Any one missing → go around: full power, carb heat cold, pitch Vx/Vy, flaps up in stages, sidestep for traffic, climb and re-enter. Calling your own go-around reads as trained and safe — examiners love it.

    High, hot, and humid = the airplane thinks it's much higher than the field elevation: longer takeoff roll, weaker climb, faster true speed (and groundspeed) on final. Lean for best power per POH at high-DA fields, compute performance before you go, and respect terrain on climb-out. Rule of thumb: DA rises ~120′ per °C above standard.
